Elementary School, Brooklyn, New York

By Sara Maniez (formerly S. L. Kellner)
This project explores the design of an elementary school in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, influenced by Montessori education theory. The scheme is composed of interlocking rectangular volumes that, when joined, create both central gathering areas and necessary egress paths.
The final model, built of wood and chipboard, demonstrates the school’s modular, puzzle-like quality, while the larger MDF site model situates the building within its urban context. Designed to be taken apart and reassembled, the model symbolizes the interconnectedness of the school’s spaces and the holistic learning environment they foster.
